The memories came flooding back to Emily in a sudden rush. The sight of the house on fire, her house, brought everything back.
Emily looked down. She found herself holding a box in her hand. The smell of petrol poured from her clothes like a thick perfume. She looked back up and saw a man carrying something bulky in his arms. The man, she recognised him. He was the same man she had seen from the window—the plumber. His clothes were burnt and Emily could make out the black singes on the blue overalls he was wearing. The item in his arms appeared to be a blanket that was wrapped around something. Whatever it was underneath the blanket, Emily could not see.
