It had been three weeks since Emily moved into the house. She had discovered several more rooms including a second cellar and an odd little cupboard tucked away in one of the bedrooms that she only found by accident after she knocked a sconce on the wall and the door clicked open. Emily could not see the need for the hidden room as it was barely large enough to fit a single person inside. She did notice that the tiny room felt colder than the bedroom had and decided it must have been due to the room being sealed off from the rest of the house and heating.
Emily had encountered no further oddities and had quite forgotten the night a few weeks prior when she had discovered Pastor Godrich’s book and the unsettling feeling she had felt about the house. Instead, her time had been spent cleaning, dusting, scraping, and repairing the house. She could not remember the last time she had completed such physically demanding work. She had now become accustomed to feeling her body ache and her mind exhausted at the end of each day. The one thing still troubling her was the plumbing. The water was a horrid brown colour and no matter what she did to try and fix it, the water continued to be brown.
She had called all the plumbers in the area to fix the issue, but as soon as she told them where she lived, they refused to help. They gave no reason for their refusal, but Emily was reminded of the way in which the realtor had acted when he sold her the house. Eventually, she found a plumber from a couple of towns over who agreed to look at it for her, though it would be a few days before he could do so.
I watch her traipsing about in my rooms, wiping away the dust that covers me and tinkering with my insides. I will wait. It is not time yet. Let her fuss. I can wait a little longer. I have waited so long already, after all.
