Deciding that she had no other choice, Emily retraced her steps. Her hands feeling their way against the wall. She reached the top of the staircase and carefully stepped down, making sure both feet were firmly planted on each step before she took the next. When she got to the bottom of the staircase, she was surprised to see the chamber was lit. She had not noticed the candelabra hanging from the middle of the ceiling before. It was an extravagant and bulky iron object that held a dozen lit candles. This unsettled Emily. Surely, she would have seen it hanging down from the ceiling, so low it almost touched her head. And the candles. Where did they come from? More importantly, who had lit them?
